Angel Choir Descending on Dawson Creek

Hark! The first annual DCCS Angel Chorus has arrived and is currently on display the Calvin Kruk Centre for the Arts  in downtown Dawson Creek. These angels, which were built following a call for submissions earlier this fall, are competing for a cash donation to the charity of their makers’ choice.

The completed angels for this year’s competition

The way it works is as follows. Each angel has been handmade by a group or individual according to given criteria (must be over 3 feet tall, be free-standing, and must have wings). The angels were debuted on December 8th during the DCCS’s Handmade Christmas Festival, the first year for this event as well. Each angel has a jar for collections as the public votes on their favourite. At the end of the DCCS Gala Concert on December 21st, the angel who has collected the highest donations will be declared the winner. The winning angel will then gift 50% of total proceeds to its cause. The remaining 50% will be dedicated to expansion of DCCS programming and community outreach activities.

What happens to the angels after the event? Well, this is still up for debate. All angels will first be offered back to their creators. They may be donated back to DCCS for auction, or to their charity of choice.

How to Vote on your Favourite Angel

You can view each angel below, and can cast your votes from this page using the PayPal button below, indicating which angel you would like to vote for. Or, you could email DCCS Artistic Director  to pledge your amount. The final opportunity to vote in person will be at the Bright Lights and City Nights Winter Gala Concert on December 21st at Unchagah Hall. The hall opens at 6:30 and concert begins at 7:00.

Music: The Best Gift of All!

Music is one of the greatest experiential gifts that you can give your loved ones – it is a lifelong source of joy through creativity and community belonging. When we sing or make music together, we develop self assurance and confidence in our individual identities while building deep connections with those around us.

We love that music is something that anyone can enjoy at any age. Newborns are constantly listening to the sounds around them and making sense of their aural environment even before they can see beyond their caregiver’s face. The patterns and pitches heard in music helps them to formulate an early recognition of language patterns and mathematical sequencing. As soon as they experience the joy of their own voice, their self-confidence and ability to express begins to skyrocket! Toddlers and preschoolers love to move to music and to explore their own creativity and identity as they discover their preferences and interests. Songs and rhymes form the basis of our earliest understanding of the alphabet and basic math.

Children and teenagers find further sources of identity and belonging through the music that they choose to listen to. Singing is not only beneficial for their ability to express themselves, but also to connect with their peers on a social and fundamentally human level. Communities around the world thrive when voices are raised together. Positive memories and friendships built through music extends into adulthood and becomes a source of nostalgia, joy, and even physical therapy.

We love to hear our members singing out together and creating beautiful sounds at all ages. Music is more than just an extracurricular activity – it is a way of life!

This year, DCCS has gift certificates available for January entry into Kindermusik and Choral programs. Gift certificates are available anytime by filling out the form below or by visiting us during the 9th Annual Gingerbread Festival on Saturday, November 24th or during our own event on Saturday, December 8th: Crafts, Cocoa & Cookies: A Handmade Christmas Festival. At both events, we will have information on our programs as well as access to purchase tickets to any of our major 2018-19 Season events.

DC Choral Society Announces Official Sponsors of 2018-19 Season

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (View as PDF)

Dawson Creek businesses and organizations sing out their support of DCCS

November 15, 2018

DAWSON CREEK, BC — The Dawson Creek Choral Society is proud to announce its official sponsors of the 2018-19 Season. The local non-profit, now in its fifth year of operations, is sustained by a variety of revenue streams including member-funded registration fees, ticket sales, and support from BC Gaming. In order to continue to offer the quality of programming and engagement that the community has come to expect from the group, DCCS has turned to the business community and local service groups.

“We are so thrilled to have this outstanding level of support,” writes Artistic Director Caitlyn Triebel. “Our programs have experienced rapid growth in the last couple of years, and in order to keep our stick on the ice we’ve had to reach out to the community. The response has been incredible and it is great to be able to continue to grow our programs while maintaining accessibility for families.”

Current enrolment within the three streams of DCCS programming is at over 120 local families. “Many of the families that are members with us include multiple siblings and parents,” Triebel adds. “Music really is a lifelong activity and we couldn’t be more pleased that we can now accommodate infants through seniors in our programs.”

On behalf of the Rotary Club of Dawson Creek Sunrise, Sally Schilds explains that the “Sunrise Rotary Club has made a commitment to support the Arts in Dawson Creek and the DC Choral Society is the perfect vehicle to do this.  We are proud to support programs that reach all age levels and encourage people of all abilities to explore the arts in a safe, welcoming atmosphere of community.”

2018-19 Season Tickets Now Available

Introducing the Dawson Creek Choral Society’s 2018-19 Season main events beginning on Friday, December 21st with the Bright Lights and City Nights Winter Gala. Our fifth annual gala concert will feature all four community choirs in a nostalgic program of new and old favourites. The Youth Show Choir takes the reins on the next event on Friday, February 22nd as they put the “show” in choir with choreographed performances. Our largest-scale event of the year is the annual Musical Theatre production, this year with four performances of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast JR sponsored by Big Time Haulers. Take a trip into provincial France and be sure to check out both of our fantastic casts of young performers. The season ends with the Flights of Fancy Dessert Concert, the final performance of our choir programs. A luxury dessert buffet makes this event one you don’t want to miss.

This is the first year that DCCS has offered season tickets, made possible by the support of Tickets in the Peace. When you subscribe to the entire season, you can save up to 25% on individual events tickets. Season tickets are $68.00 or $34.00 for youth under 12. Build a Winning Angel to Raise Funds this December

Build a winning angel to raise funds this December for your local charity or non-profit of choice!
“You don’t have to be an angel to sing harmony” (Carly Simon, “The Night Before Christmas”)

You can create harmony in your own community this December by participating in the Dawson Creek Choral Society’s Angel Chorus Charity Competition. DCCS is inviting local businesses, non-profits, and individuals to get crafty and build something great for Dawson Creek. We are asking teams to build a free-standing angel out of whatever materials you can think of (recycled materials, sticks, fabric, metal, books, junk, etc.).

Competition Rules:
  1. Angels must be free-standing and at least 3 feet tall
  2. Angels need to have wings
  3. Each team must declare the chosen cause in advance, to be displayed during the voting period. The non-profit or charity must operate locally to be eligible.
Vote On Your Favourite Angelic Creation
The public will be invited to vote on their favourite angels at two DCCS events, starting with the Crafts, Cocoa & Cookies Handmade Christmas Festival on Saturday, December 8th at the Kiwanis Performing Arts Centre from 11:00 to 3:00. The final event for voting will be the Bright Lights and City Nights Winter Gala on Friday, December 21st at Unchagah Hall.
Vote by dropping change or cash into your favourite angel’s jar, or by pledging online (more details on this coming soon). The angel that raises the most money will be declared the winner, and the winning team then donates 50% of total proceeds to their charity or non-profit. The remaining funds go to support expansion of DCCS programs in 2019.
We hope that our chorus of angels will generate some decent funds for a local group. The winning angel and the total amount raised will be announced at the end of the concert on December 21st. Watch our blog for more information and online voting.
For more information, or to submit an angel, please contact Caitlyn Triebel before November 25th. All angels must be delivered to KPAC on Friday, December 7th.

Become an Official Sponsor of our 2018-19 Season!

This September, the Dawson Creek Choral Society is entering its fifth season! We are offering six full-year programs and expect up to 180 participants in Kindermusik, Choir, and Musical Theatre. The DCCS is a unique organization for Dawson Creek, in that its programs reach all generations of our community. We believe that music truly is a lifelong journey. Our goal is to cultivate a love of music by providing confidence-building opportunities to all members regardless of age or background.

As non-profit organization, DCCS operates for the benefit of its members. One of our priorities is to provide accessible programming so that all families can participate in music regardless of economic factors. We have a strong partnership with the Dawson Creek Arts & Wellness Society, with all programs eligible for financial support to youth aged 0 to 24.

This year, we are putting on a number of public events. These events include Bright Lights and City Nights – Winter Gala Concert on December 21, the One Night Only Show Choir Concert on February 22, a children’s Musical Theatre production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast JR in March, and the Flights of Fancy Dessert Concert on May 4. We will also be hosting a number of other non-performance events over the course of the season.

In order to support a wide variety of programs and events, DCCS is seeking partners and sponsors for the year. In-kind support could be building or crafting materials, advertising, office materials, safety equipment, technical equipment (such as PAs and microphones), and children’s instruments. Cash donations will go toward venue rentals, performance rights, costuming, set construction, and other general program expenses.

If you or your company is interested in becoming an official partner with us, please contact Caitlyn Triebel (DCCS Artistic Director) by email or phone, 250-467-9277.

Other ways that you can help are by attending the Co-Op Fuel Good Day on Tuesday, September 18, stopping by to see us at Legacy Car Wash on Saturday, September 22, or by attending any of our any public events. Anyone can also support us by purchasing a DCCS membership – no singing required.

Dawson Co-Op Fuels Music Programming With 10¢/Litre Donated to DCCS

September 10, 2018

DAWSON CREEK, BC —The Dawson Creek Co-Op Gas Bar is participating in the annual ‘Fuel Good Day’ on Tuesday, September 18th. This year, 10 cents per litre of fuel sold will be donated to local music programming through the Dawson Creek Choral Society. This includes all grades of gasoline and diesel fuel from 6AM to 10PM.

Between 3:30 and 5PM, the Co-Op will be serving chili and buns for $4 in the parking lot beside the gas bar. When you come by to fuel up during these times, you may also be serenaded by the DCCS singers who will be there to volunteer and sing throughout the afternoon.

This fall, DCCS is kicking off its fifth season with full program offerings for ages 0 to 99. “We are always looking for ways for our members to get out into the community to give back, whether it’s through our voices or spirit of volunteerism,” says Caitlyn Triebel, the Society’s Artistic Director. “It is just such a great opportunity to partner with the Co-Op on this event.” Proceeds from Fuel Good Day will go toward DCCS programs and events for the 2018-19 Season.

Last year, Fuel Good Day raised more than $570,000 for registered charities and non-profits – all in a single day. Tell your friends, family, neighbours, hairdresser, dentist — everyone. Get down to your local Co-op Gas Bar on Sept. 18 to fill up and Fuel Good!
